The Auction Plus staff always wants our buyers to have a fun successful auction day. To help our buyers with this we have put together a short list of three easy tips to help all of our buyers hopefully achieve that goal. We want to make the day a little easier for everyone and hopefully prepare you for some things you might not have thought of, or are not implementing on your trip to the auction.

Tip #1

Planning – Once you have an auction in mind that you plan to attend, make sure you get to planning out all the details of your trip to the auction that day. Here at Auction Plus we do our best to get details, directions, terms and conditions, and pictures up in advance on our website and on Facebook so you can begin looking and planning for your trip to our auction that day. Take advantage of all this information, and if there is something you need to know more about be sure to call and get that info. in advance. Some things you need to consider when planning would be:

Location- Are you going to have to travel far to get to the auction? If so, some extra planning may need to take place to plan your trip.

Inside or Out? You definitely want to find out more about the location. Is it an inside auction? If not do I need to dress differently for the weather? Is it going to rain? (BTW here is a free extra tip…The best auctions tend to be in the rain for some weird reason, so if it’s raining don’t let it discourage you. Just dress for success and get on out there anyway!) Some other questions you may want to ask. Do they provide seating? or do I need to bring my own lawn chair?

How many lots? The amount of lots or length of the auction can make or break you as well. You want to make sure you have some idea of how long it is going to be. The best way to get this info is to call the auctioneer and ask. If it is going to be a lengthy one you want to make sure and plan your day accordingly.

Food and Drink- Don’t forget to find out about food! Nobody wants to get stuck somewhere hungry, so it is always a good idea to figure out if concessions will be available. It’s never a bad idea to pack along some extra snacks and drinks of your own just in case. At Auction Plus we try to have concessions available, but sometimes it is difficult to get folks out every auction. Luckily for us we are right in the heart of Cresson, Texas so we are close to food joints including a sonic right next door.

What kind of stuff am I buying? You want to know what you are interested in ahead of time. Look at those pictures on the website. If the auction company offers a preview take advantage of it and get a good look at what you may be buying. If it is breakable stuff you may want to bring some packing material just in case. If it is larger items you may consider bringing a truck and/or trailer. If it needs to be dismantled you may need tools…all these things are part of the planning process.

In short, the more you plan the better off you will be, and the better your auction trip will go.

Tip #2

Know the Terms

It is vital that you understand what the terms of the sale are before you arrive. Most auction companies post the terms on all their advertisement. At Auction Plus we do this plus we post it on our website with each auction listing for you to view beforehand. Look at those terms and ask some of the following questions in your mind as you review them:

What kind of payments do they take? Cash, Credit Cards, Gold Bullion?

Is there a buyers premium? If so, how much?

Does it mention anything about being absolute? If not I am assuming there are reserves, because I read all about reserves in an earlier Auction Plus post.

Are there any warranties or guarantees.

When do the items need to be removed? Can I make arrangements if I need to come back to pick up?

Know the terms, and don’t let the terms surprise you!

Tip #3

Inspect and Investigate

Make sure you know what you are buying. Look at the pictures, call the auctioneer for more info., and if offered go to the preview.

You want to make sure you check out the items you are interested in thoroughly before bidding. I don’t know how many times I have bought items at auction that I did not thoroughly inspect only to get them home and realize something was broken or there was damage that I didn’t notice.

You have to keep in mind a lot of the items you are bidding on have been used, so take the time to see the full conditions of those items you are interested in. You also want to verify authenticity if possible. Bring a jewelers loop, a magnet, and be ready to investigate. If you can get info. before hand look it up online and see what you can find out. Do the research it just might pay off.

Take advantage of preview, online pictures and get there early. If preview is offered it is a great time to get a close up look at the items you are interested in. If you can’t get to preview, then take advantage of any online pictures. Don’t forget to set that alarm clock and get there a little early so you can get one more close look at the items in case you missed something.

Inspect and Investigate the items the best you can, don’t just assume they work or are in good shape. Look at it close in, under, on top, and behind. Most auction companies sell items ‘as is, where is’ with no guarantees or warranties, so buyer beware and buyer be aware.

Remember you are paying good money for those items. Take the time to know what you are getting.

There you go. Three easy tips to help make your auction day better.

Remember #1 Plan #2 Know the Terms #3 Inspect and Investigate.

Auctions Plus has had a busy year so far! With new merchandise coming in almost weekly from around the State, and new customers checking us out at each auction. We have been proud to continue to add on to our facility in Cresson even more as the summer months arrived while still providing the open pavilion feel. We are always excited to do business liquidations, and On Site Estate Auctions at other locations, but we know that the bulk of our success and the success of our customers really depends on our awesome location in Cresson, Texas. Being located in the heart of Cresson means we are only minutes from several major cities and towns that provide access to awesome sellers and awesome buyers! The four big populations that we are pleased to be reaching are Fort Worth, Cleburne, Granbury and Weatherford. The Fort Worth metroplex offers huge advantages for buyers and sellers to collide and we are located in just the right spot to get this done, literally being a gateway for many smaller communities and their residents as they commute there on main Highway 377.  Cresson is a crossroads community for folks from Granbury and the surrounding areas as they travel to the metroplex and also for Cleburne and Godley, Texas residents as they travel to Fort Worth and Weatherford. Beyond our awesome crew, and customers who by no means go unnoticed when it comes to our success! It is also worth mentioning that our location is a big winner when it comes to successful auctions as well!

Well 2015 is coming to an end and the last Auction of the year is scheduled for December 5th in Bluff Dale, Texas. We will be liquidating the Antique Station Antiques and Collectible Store as they close down shop. Looking back we realize have had a big year and are looking forward to the next year as this one comes to a close. The years end has brought several large auctions with half a dozen or so being On Site Auctions. We have taken thousands of consignments over the year, liquidated several Estates, and Businesses and even managed to slip in a Benefit or two. With the close of 2015 we are excited about next year and want our customers to know we are, and have been working on exciting changes and updates for Auctions Plus. First if you were at our last consignment sale you noticed expansions to our building which will allow for more room and growth in the new year. We also have been steadily working on improving our office and clerking system to make it even smoother. Internet wise our internet and marketing staff is gearing up for updates on email delivery and new marketing plans for 2016. The team is also preparing to have more Online Only Auctions with the coming year.

If you have been watching our calendar you already know that we have a New Years Day Auction slated with some awesome furniture and other items already in the mix. Later in the month of January the years first Online Only Auction is scheduled to kick off. We also have been steadily looking at sales with lots of big potential. We have hopes of some fairly large sales within the first few months of the year, and hope for a year of record breaking for the company. Regardless of the outcome of contracts we are growing in leaps and bounds, and we know that the new year brings new and exciting sales and improvements so stay tuned as we ring out the old and bring in the new!

One of the frustrations as an auctioneer is trying to educate the public on the auction method as a whole, but more specifically about understanding market value and market trends. I hear over and over again at auctions how certain things went too high, or too cheap. There is always that person in the crowd that makes the comment about what something is going for on the internet or what it sold for at another sale last month. It truly is a pet peeve of mine. I even hear fellow auctioneers and ringmen saying the same things often. I want to explain market value briefly in this post. What it is and what it isn’t.  Here is a simple definition of market value. Market Value-The value of an item at a sale determined by the buyers at that sale on that day. That is it…it is really that simple, so what is my frustration? My frustration comes from the false notion that just because someone across town sold an item that you are selling for more or less than you did, or that an internet site has the same item listed differently than you just sold yours for means that it should be close to that price as well. Do you understand what I am saying? Let me explain it differently. Customers either buyers or sellers participate in an auction and asses the items there. They try to decide what the items are worth before the selling starts. Often times this includes looking it up on a smart phone and seeing what it has sold for elsewhere or what it is being offered for somewhere else. Once the auction starts they have a preconceived notion about item worth, and when those numbers in their head are not reached they believe it was either too cheap or too high based on the numbers they have established. Now make no mistake as an auctioneer price research is important for our business. It is very important for us to know what items are selling for on the open market. However these are just rough figures to help us with our marketing and selling. They by no means provide a true value on sale day. That is where we come to my overall point. True Market Value on an item is established on auction day. If the auctioneer has done his job to advertise the sale properly the results of the sale will prove true market value for the items in that sale. Let’s use an example to clarify this. Let’s say that Joe Farmer has contracted you to do a farm sale for him. You set the date, advertise the snot out of it, and prepare for the sale. Joe Farmer has a tractor he is selling in the sale, and the tractor should bring about $2000 based on your research. Sale day approaches the crowd pours in and when you get to the tractor it sells for $1500. Did it go too cheap? Did you do something wrong?…The answer is probably no on both. It simply brought market value or to say it like one of my mentors says it. ‘It brought all that it was worth on that day’. No need to beat yourself up or be beat up by the seller. It simply brought its market value at that particular auction. People contract us to have auctions for them, and we provide a set of skills that only we can do, and we have to remember what market value is and that we are not miracle workers. We cannot control market value. Once the auction begins it is truly up to the buyers as to what they are willing to pay for items in that auction. I often say that is one of the coolest things about an auction. It truly is the purest form of the free market. In closing I hope that the next time you think that something went too cheap or too high at a sale remember. It went exactly for what it was worth at that time in that place. It brought its market value.

If you have been following the growth of Auctions Plus over the last year you know that its reach is widespread. With the development of a new website and sending teams as far away as Illinois and Ohio to pick up items the growth has seemed to go into overdrive in recent months. Auctions Plus has recently acquired items from several North Texas cities including Garland, Azle, Bluff Dale, Granbury, Cresson, and Fort Worth. Those are just a few areas that we have been getting items consigned to us from not to mention a shipment of coins and jewelry from North Carolina. It is an exciting time for the team and they are looking forward to the next few months as 2015 begins to come to an end. A lot is in store for 2016 and with the year that Auctions Plus has had so far there is no telling where items will be coming from in the future. Record breaking crowds seem to be driving the amount of items that are showing up as a healthy crowd at each auction seems to generate our customers confidence that they will get top dollar for their items each time they send them our way. If you are interested in consigning items with us please make sure to give us a call.

A little bit of everything was mixed in among the items including many items that sold by the bulk. In talking with Larry Richeson and Bobby Mabery it was believed by both that this was our biggest sale to date at our auction facility in Cresson. To add to the large sale we were pleased to have a record crowd in attendance. Brenda Mabery who helps manage bidder registration tells us that there were 184 registered bidders with several more registered absentee bidders on top of that. In attendance overall was over 200 bidders and guests. It was an awesome day with an awesome crowd and the Auctions Plus team thanks everyone who came out and supported us.

Bobby Mabery of Auctions Plus says it is the trend right now and primitives are hot, while furniture especially modern is taking a backseat at auctions. He does add that the trend will change and already sees some furniture prices bumping back up as new design and repurposing ideas continue to come out.
